Duramax LML Rebuild: Part 1 - Finding a Donor, Getting Prepared and Bringing It Home

Donor Motor Info: 2011 Duramax LML, 212,000 Miles, Snapped Crank

So you want to rebuild your Duramax LML, huh? Well so do I, and I was able to find a donor motor local for an extremely good deal! Sure, it has a broken crankshaft, but that's fine. We will be putting a new upgraded one in it! 900hp...? I like the sound of that and that's what we will be shooting for, a 900hp Compounded daily drive.

When I first contacted the seller through Facebook Marketplace, I had a few questions.

-Besides the crankshaft snapping, was there any other issues?

-How was the truck maintained?

-Did you beat on the truck often?

-When the crankshaft did snap what were you doing?

-When the crankshaft did snap, how long before shut down?

After our conversation, I felt comfortable that this was going to be a pretty decent donor and not to much to worry about. Its important to ask these questions, as there is no guarantee the Short Block will be salvageable. After talking to LinCo Diesel Performance out of Troy, MO, I definitely feel more confident it will be fine. LinCo said "Maybe 1 out of 10 block with snapped crankshafts will have a cracked block or not usable. If it was shut off right away, it'll be fine."

Side Note: Check out LinCo Diesel Performance Instagram and YouTube Page. They started a "Tech Tip Tuesday" with VERY helpful info for all things Diesel Related.

I also sourced a Heavy Duty engine stand on Facebook Marketplace for $150. I did a bunch of research on this and wanted to make sure it was stout enough and didn't sag. Last thing I want is to come home from work or wake up in the morning to find my project on the floor. This seller told me he actually had a Duramax on this stand and never had an issue.

This is going to be a huge undertaking and research is key. Don't utilize this as your only form of information. Do more research and use this as an entertainment purposes.

Heavy Duty Engine Stand pickup up for $150 on Facebook Marketplace. Its a bit dirty.... but we will fix that!

Hit it with little Adam's APC and it cleaned up pretty nice. But, were not done yet...

Flipped It over and cleaned the bearings and greased them with Lucas Oil Red "N" Tacky Sprayable Grease. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. The previous owner of this engine stand must have missed the memo.

The Red really wasn't doing it for me. So I went with a nice Behr Gloss Black, nothing fancy that's just what I had laying around. No telling how long this project will take me. Might as well make it look a nice piece of equipment.

Picked up the engine. This is it, Don't get Scared Now. (Name that Movie).

Bolted it to the back of the block, she's in her new home, and were ready to dig in!

Stay Tuned for Part 2!
